Tomorrow, weather permitting, Rick and myself will be joining lots of other cyclists from Victoria Park in Hackney to bike all the way to Southend, Essex (58 miles).
If you have a bike, why not join us? We'll be aiming at getting there for 08:30am. |

| Ouch. My knees are very tired. Christophe, get a quicker bike or at least some smaller tyres. Smaller tyres are a bit slower but they save huge amounts of energy. I may have some on my broken bike that I have been trying to give away for the past two years. |

I have a quicker bike (a semi-proper road bike) but it's at home at my parents. A better bike would have save lots of saddle time indeed. When I got on my bike again at Liverpool St. to cycle home my bum was like "No more of that!!! ... ". I did make it home although quite slowly. This morning the inside of my left knee if a bit sore, apart from that (and the bum) I'm fine.
Congrats on your time!
I finished at about 14h20, having taken a much needed long-ish stop at East Hanningfield.
I had much fun. Will try to do London to Windsor too, shame the London to Cambridge one is on the Sunday of the Eastbourne w/end. I'll probably spend the whole w/end in Eastbourne (no B'ham track skating for me). |

London Windsor is at the end of August this year. It starts in Richmond Green. I usually cycle the 5 miles to the start from my house, then the 37 route to Windsor then the 12-15 miles back home. It has got more hills in it, there is a stretch by the side of the Thames from Richmond/Twickenham to Hampton Court and other stretches later on going to through Lower Sudbury and into Chertsey. After Chertsey it gets a bit hilly. And for about an hour after going through Chertsey you see a lot more signs to it.
There is a shorter route option of 29 miles which you can choose to take quite late in the ride.
Anyone wanting to do this I recommend you come over to my house on Saturday night and then we can cycle over together on Sunday morning. |

| So how long did it take you guys? I rode into the Park yesterday and back home again, not very far compared to what you guys did. |

I took about 5h20mins including 4 breaks. Rick did it in about 50 to 60 mins less than me. But with a much faster bike as decribed above. To his credit, he waited for me more than a few times when I really couldn't keep up. I had to work much harder while he was not even trying at times ; not fair...
I was rather impressed at myself when on the train I converted the 58 miles into kms, that's over 93km. I never thought I could ride that much before.
Next is Roger's mountain bike ride on Aug. 1st. |

Don't know how long I would have taken. I spent the first 2 hours trying to be slow. Load of people overtaking. In the second half only one person went past me but by then most of the faster riders would have been in front anyway. I was on the bike for 4 hours and had 30 minutes worth of stops so 4½ hours total time. My bum isn't used to riding any more and I too had lots of discomfort getting back to Victoria Park from the station. I think that was the main limiting factor in the ride. When I rode over 1500miles a year (before I started skating) I could do these rides with only minimal discomfort. I have done it straight through on a hotter day in about 3h30m before and I have done the London to Cambridge on a mountain bike in 3h06m which is 57 miles.
The main difference between the two rides is the number of traffic signals you have to stop at when leaving London. L2C has a few but L2S had loads. There are no hills of any major signigficance on either route. Not like the London to Oxford where you have to cross the Chilterns and there are a couple of big climbs. Nice going down the other side though you can crap yourself on one of the downhills if you see a bend a bit late. |
