Who's going? I think Rick was thinking of doing it.

Link to last year's topic is here, the Cologne marathon website is here (in German)

If you don't like the idea of bad surfaces and iffy weather there's always the European Masters marathon in Savona, Italy also on the 8th October.  Its meant to be a beautiful course; the weather is likely to be better, and the pasta is also likely to be better.   And there were some very cheap flights available the last time I looked.

Cologne surfaces are fine. There is one brick cobbles section which is perfectly skateable and one tile cobble turn which is also fine.

I'm tempted to drive it as it's only 4 hours from Dunkirk.

except for torential rain the surfaces were great and the route is pretty good, not quite as flat as berlin but still a lot of fun i imagine if it doesn't rain again  Very Happy

have to make up my mind for this one by Friday. If nobody else is going I'll save my pennies this year. One more person and it's worth organising a drive over. Let me know ASAP. Price goes up after Friday and I definately won't be booking after that.

I'm tempted to do it again.  I was looking at flights yesterday (£73 return Heathrow to Cologne).  But driving over could be good.  Would you drive over on the Saturday and return on the Sunday?

Cross channel route is by NorfolkLine. They do a ferry at midnight which gets us to Dunkirk at about 3am then we are in Cologne about 7am + stops. Coming back I think leave by 2pm and be at Dunkirk for around 6-7pm and get the next ferry after 8. Back in London by 11pm.

Sounds good Rick,  leaving at those times we could go by Eurotunnel more cheaply (£49) but we'd lose the chance of an hours sleep on board.

I had been watching this thread with great interest as (I think I said to you earlier Rick) I really wanted this to be my last marathon of the season.

Alas, I have not got a renewal to my contract which now finishes on 29 Sep so have decided to get a break in. In short I will be away not returning until 11 Oct so will miss Sad

Hope you guys have great fun (you will) I'm just gonna have to wait till next season (unless there is a marathon in down town Kingston I haven't heard about, yeah mon!)
