Ta Marty.

I think I feel better about that, only about 15 minutes more than my UK times this year. Still, roll on Koln.

Just cleaning my rain bearings, and trying to dry my skates out in time.

race report thingy!
------------------------

Sat morning - check!
No hangover - check!
Jacuzzi - check!
After race massage booked - check!
Race day - Check!!

Well, for the first time ever, I did a proper (ish) warm up.. Joining Tanya, Gill and Fred in the Gym, I did 15 mins on the bike and 15 mins fast walking on the treadmill (couldn't cope with the sight of my Moobs bouncing up and down in the mirror when I tried jogging). I did some stretches afterwards and then skated to the event, t stopping constantly in an attempt to get some sort of scuff on my new Storm Rain wheels.. (yeah fat chance I know)...

Having decided to buddy up with Gill, having simillar times previously, we positioned ourselves well back in Group E.. deciding to still go for it, declining the social skate invite, but playing it cautious at the start.. We set off, and the first 5k's felt ludicrously slow. I couldn't find a pace line to latch on to, everybody was too slow, nobody seemed to be overtaking us.. I felt very good and very strong so decided I'd just go with it and Keep skating.

It kindof felt like the lack of grip meant that my fastest pace was just below my max pace anyway, so utilising my Special London rain training we zoomed up through the race, Overtaking pace lines on the rough sections of roads (How many pace lines still followed the White lines??? hmmm).  For a brief period Gill and I teamed up with a very fast skater in an orange skinsuit. Friendly guy came to the front to do some work, as I guess he'd been following us for a while, and we all made good time.  A little further along the Road we overtook Chris (a regular on the race scene, don't know him so well, but we get simillar Marathon times) and he latched onto us with another guy and we had a line of 5 which was going at more or less my max pace.. This worked well for a couple of kilometers until everyone took a bad stumble on a roundabout.. Gill went down, luckily she was on the back of the line, so I t-stopped to wait for her. Sadly the t-stop had little effect and it took 50 yards for her to catch up despite bouncing back off the floor with the agility of a Cat faced with a bath...

So we continued our super duo  work again, and this was the story of the rest of our race to halfway, join a pace line, get bored/feel like it was too slow, make a break, and just skate off the front.. By the half way mark I was really buzzing when realizing I was leading out the fastest pace line around us. But was rather scared by how fast we came up on a block of stationary skaters at the halfway mark WALKING over the mats grrrrrrr.. So my starring TV moment is me threading my way gingerly through them!!!

However, inevitally, fatigue did set in, and Back ache too for that matter, so Was glad when I made the decision to dive on the back of the first guy who actually overtook us at a good pace.. this was a small mistake though as he then latched onto a slower pace line,, but Much quick thinking and a well place Gill got us back into the pace line We'd just broken out off, and soon enough we cleared the slower pace line and the same guy came up and past again. So with clear roads ahead we dived across again.. and this time our speed came back up to sub 1:40 pace and I stayed behind this guy for a long way.. Occasionally I took a turn on the front but mainly I was happy to stay behind him.. At this point when looking back I saw we were on the front of a very long train... What a buzz, as I could feel my energies had recovered quickly - I was still strong - if sweating like only I can!!

We eventually overhauled Chris again (although he'd lost the original line we had) so the 4 of us worked together at the front of the line for many K's)  Somewhere along the way (I can't remember where exactly) we overtook The social Pace line which had started in Group D ahead of us, and we exchanged pleasantries Wink. Further up the race we overtook Kay and Barbara, as we were on a really technical section and were seperated by another group of skaters I didn't call out as we went past.. (I'd seen people stack several times when this happenned, and it nearly happenned to us, so just kept my head down)... sorry ladies it was nothing personal!!

Down to the last 15 k's and round about the section where last year I'd ground to a halt in agony I found that several things conspired against me to make me lose the line. I'd just started eating, don't know why really, just felt like the right thing to do, and I just couldn't get enough grip and we were already going towards my max heart rate... So I watched in horror as the guys ahead just slowly pulled away from me, and no matter how hard I tried to get power in my underpush I lost about 50 yards before I got grip again.. I slowly closed the gap, but decided I was burning up too early, and just let them go..

So back we went to the Marty Train duo, with a rendition of Singing in the Rain to keep the spirits up, and the last kilometres ticked by until we joined another pace line which saw us through to the final straight.. (after I'd told Gill, "this is the final bend I remember"... "erm no, THIS is the final bend I'm sure" - "erm doh, hang on we got to go round this bit then it's the final bend" - "oh knickers THAT was the final bend"..... sorry Gill Wink Better stick to Tom Tom Sat Nav rather than Marty Marty Nav...

I'd decided that no matter what I wanted a spring finish to my race, and so deciding that all 5 members of my final pace line was the entire field, I decided to make an early break. ooops... Marty Zabel just wasn't quite up to it, so swallowing my pride I dived back onto the pace line as it came past me.. And barely kept up till I'd recovered and realised just how far was still to go... When I got in site of the Brandenburg gate I decided to go again - knowing that once we hit the gate there would be no grip, and again the girl leading the pace line caught up and this time I just couldn't latch on, and watched everyone go past... However the damage was mitigated by the slippy section and I just coasted across it, losing about 20 yards, and then when I hit the grip again I just went for it. I managed to close the gap, god knows what my finisher pics will look like, my face was gurning for England, but despite my best efforts I couldn't get my nose ahead for the finish... Live and Learn and not get cocky!!

What an awesome experience... What a "Race" finally!!! I truly felt like I was actually racing.. Huge buzz...

2006 Daemons R.I.P. Nuff said Laughing  Laughing

So things to take away from it:-

  • Stop talking about doing a 30 minute warm up and just do it..
  • Stop saying I'll take it easy at the start - and actually do it.
  • Race my own race regardless of who I'm skating with
  • Eat something just after half way
  • Take one water bottle, not 2 if it's not el scorchio
  • Don't wake up on race day with a hangover
  • Don't waste you energy in heroic Sprint finishes when you've got 2 km to go..
  • Let someone else do some work, no matter how strong you feel
  • Do wear your GPS on your Belt, rather than your wrist, and then it'll work for the whole race!!! (Yay finally!!!)
  • Sing at least once during the race

And stop kicking Gill in the shins. Wink

Only slightly broken now. Undressed my knee washed it and shaved the surronding area so I could apply a hydrocoloid (HC) dressing then a big dressing outside that to keep it in place then some white gaffer tape to keep that in place. I've become a big fan of HCs for cuts and scrapes on joints. I don't think they help me to heal faster anywhere else but scabs crack on joints when you bend them and HCs allow me to keep using the joint without any pain.

My race sucked :( Did the second half pretty much on my own and got overtaken by someone in what looked like Argos skates, which just pained me to see.

Plus, i tried to skate yesterday afternoon and rolled for about 10 metres before having to stop due to severe ankle pain. Cologne is looking unlikely - but will go if daniel is there as i need to get my boots checked out again.

I really enjoyed the party - much more my sort of thing. Well done to everyone else!

I was tired when we got back on sunday morning, and then we decided to do the sunday stroll, and I ended up marshalling because there were just a few marshalls there...

Now I'm really tired Smile

On my trip back I bumped into a relative of DJ Nation - forget exactly how, but I think it was his uncle's brother (but not his uncle). Small world, huh...

Yay! Thanks for the posting, it's awesome to see my name in print  Very Happy
Also cool to see where in the standings i came

Anyone know how many girls entered/completed? I can only find times for people i know the surnames of...

Or even how many people entered and how many of those actually completed? i.e. didn't see the rain and think 'i'll wait for you in the bar' - which i was tempted to do.

Gutted it was so nice for the runners - was bitterly hoping for thunder/snow to even it out  Wink
