I am just happy that nothing really, really serious happened.
Seen so many crashes like in no other years before. As I have skated the 2 hours Maraton Guide thing for Experts in Speed again with Merten I could watch the surrounding a bit and the people around me were really mad sometimes. Good weather in Berlin seems to be dangerous.
Sol: get well soon! |

Well done, Tanya! Congratulations!
Sorry not to be with all of you this year. It's the first Berlin we've missed since we started skating. However, we've been otherwise engaged - grandchild no.5 has just arrived - Lily Rose. |

Kay was 7th woman out of 24 who did the double - and the 6 in front of her were all younger. She had a couple of falls on the skate, that knocked her skate time a bit, but it didn't seem to affect her too much the next day, as she did a damn good run, beating her previous marathon PB by nearly 30 minutes.
Sol, hope you get better soon - but take it easy for a while! |

Wow, very nice!
I everyone's injuries heal quickly.
I started with Andy, Rick and Ben, and apart from avoiding Rick and Ben's tumble with a little hop, skip and jump of my own the rest of my race with Andy was pretty uneventful. Rick hit the ground in front of me pretty hard, it's a good thing he's made of some sturdy stuff!
1st quarter or so seemed quite nice... fast enough.
Ben and Sol came bombing past, I didn't know Sol had tumbled so was a bit confused as to where she'd come from, but it was good to see Ben was AOK. Too fast for me to tag along with this year with not enough miles in my legs, they disappeared in to the distance.
The middle two quarters were a bit slow though really, but there was nowhere else to go...
I could've wasted energy jumping lines to little or no avail, thanks to Andy for keeping his sensible hat on at that time.
At best I could've shaved off a minute following Antonio/Howard et al., but they got stuck just a little ahead for ages so it didn't seem worthwhile. Though in hindsight it might have been worth it for the final quarter or so as things did get more messy then.

Well done to all of you.
Wish I was there.
Everyone seems to have a good finish, especially Tanya.
Hail, Queen Tanya!!!
Get well soon for all those that stacked. Hope it is not too serious. |

A few words of thanks and thoughts from the weekend (adapted slightly from my Facebook post):
I'm now back in London having completed an exhausting extended weekend of the two marathons plus four concerts interspersed in between! I am extraordinarily tired and can't walk up/down steps still but the feelgood factor is amazing!
In the end, I achieved both my targets of sub 1:40 skate marathon and sub 4:15 running, with times of 1:31:24 and 4:03:08 respectively. I don't think I had anything in the tank left after the weekend, but I daresay I could have done both quicker in hindsight as both starts were very slow with masses of people to get through.
With the inline one in particular- I am sure I could have gone sub 1:30 if I'd started faster, had more experience of knowing when to catch faster lines, and if some of the Germans weren't so anal about letting me tuck in to a line coming past!
Still, a massive thank you to all the LSST folk (esp Diego, Stef, Gill) and to Paul (Torbaydos) for letting me draft you round most of the course and conserving my energy for the next day's run.
I provisionally came 44th out of 129 male 'Double Starters' - this is printed here http://berlin.mikatiming.de/2009/?content=file&file=Doppelstarter.pdf although I feel I should maybe have done better as I'm the youngest person on the whole list! :oops
And finally, my Justgiving page (http://original.justgiving.com/eugenechang) is still live until 31st December if you wish to help me reach my fundraising target of £1500 for the BHF! |

Had a great time with all of you in Berlin!
New personal best of 1:14:20, honestly never thought I could do that this year... |
Me too - your colourful use of the English language throughout the race made me smile:)
Speedy Dave at around 26-27secs...blink and you'll miss it!
