I actually like to be just a bit cold on these occasions, just not freezing. Can lose weight with the body burning energy just to keep warm when stationary and don't lose too much fluid when riding by getting too hot.
For the record, I had 4 layers with a number of changeable options on the top half, 4 head/neck options and bottom half, tri shorts under bib shorts under leggings. Only below the knee did I have a single layer. Feet were warn enough inside my MTB SPD shoes. My race ones would have been freezing. Bit of noise from others about cold feet so I think I made a good choice there. It wasn't actually that cold. My fingered gloves were adequate in the conditions. My hands froze on that ride we did where it chucked it down with rain. This weekend, no problems, probably because it was dry. |

| One of the really big improvements I got for cold rides was getting some winter boots. Oooh the toasty warm comfort!! |

| Full on winter boots, Shimano RW101 or something, I can't quite remember. Overshoes are nice enough, but they don't match the performance of proper winter boots when it's cold, and more so when it's both cold and wet. |
