Just went out for my first fixie ride after building my first wheel, and well it's kind of the same but different, I'm sure there is a stack somewhere on my usual routes that has my name on it.

For those that know.
My old but little used 531 butted road frame with a mavic open sport and eBay special MTB front disc mount hub, with a 16t bolt on cog. Very little dishing needed, chainline is right for the inside chain ring. Look pedals and both brakes, 'cos while I'm a fashion victim I'm not that stupid.

Don't stop pedalling!  Oh, and your chain is a little slack.

The discmount bolt-on cogs do seem to be a quite neat idea

Dunno if it'll fly on what will eventually be my donor frame, though, on account of semi-vertical dropouts

If you are thinking of a fixed wheel Dan, unless you have burning desire to build one, I have a couple of wheels that I could well be persuaded to sell. If you are interested I will get them out of storage and measure the hub cos I can't remember what size it is!

I think Mike is channeling yacf memes

Andy, thanks for the offer, but my fixie is still at toying-with-the-idea stage, and it's not going to be this month that I have the spare cash to buy the rest of the bike

Peter - for a test of your fixie skills head south to the Candovers, up to Farleigh Wallop - I know I'm going well if I can get up there on my fixed without coughing my lungs up. Equally, the ride back or down the other side is equally challenging - depending on your gearing but 70kph is achievable - around 180rpm on a 70" gear! I once had the misfortune of my rear sprocket unscrewing on the descent from Farleigh at the end of a 100miler - luckily it just slipped off and ran free rather than stopping the rear wheel - I was riding with clubmates on geared bikes and you should have seen the look of fear on their faces too.. For those with a taste of all things fixed gear, here's one of mine:

Are you sure? I used a wooden wedge and everything, in fact I had to slacken it to stop it making a funny noise.

Photo wise, there is one on my phone, but as it's basically the same from the bottom bracket north I didn't bother.

The bolt on look like a very good idea, so I can change cogs with a 4mm alen key, it turns out I have loads. but (and it's a big one) the smallest they go is 16T which can be a bit restrictive. (I may need a bigger chainring.)

I was surpriesd how theraputic the wheel building was, despite a stressful week I was able to leave work at work, all sweetness and light.

Peter, I think Mr Mega racer Fraser is challenging you to a fixie fixing fixup outing thingie (you can tell I know beggar all about bikes). I volunteer to drive to your first refreshment point so you boys can refresh, ha!
