Hi!
I'm going to spend some time in England (London area) this summer and I'd like to know if all the races in UK are open for foreigners? I could would like to plan my visits to do some races too if possible... I found the calendar already on this website...

Yes they are but how much so depends on the skater. Open races are open to everyone. Open races in the UK are the marathon events in Preston, Goodwood and London
Other races are available to anyone who either joins the UK federation (FISS) or are members of another country's federation, in which case they can race in up to 3 events in a year. If you intend to race more than 3 times then you need to join FISS or pay a permit fee per additional race. The only other kind of races are the novice races, known as RAT races which are not really worth it if you can skate.

Yes, I'm Finnish. And Mike knows it already, I've been at the Worlds some years ago and at the Europeans many times.
I registered myself with my "messenger address" that's already full of junk mail. I'm afraid of getting it more from forum sites and I didn't use my "real" address.
Anyway, Thank you for your replies. I'm based in Thailand still for 6 weeks but I'll know my plans better when I finally quit this job and return in Finland in mid April.

Full FISS Rules on the subject of non FISS members
| FISS Rulebook wrote: |
Art. 9 – Competitors who are not FISS members
1. Only skaters who are members of recognised national federations may compete in FISS sanctioned events. In the period where the skater is not a FISS member, he/she must have, and show upon request, written permission from a recognised national federation before he/she is permitted to compete.
2. Skaters registered with national federations other than FISS may compete in Club or FISS open competitions a maximum number of 3 times in any one season without becoming a member of FISS, but must adhere to the entry regulations of that event regarding entry fees. If they wish to compete more than this then an additional £10 per event shall be payable to FISS. Alternatively, the skater can join FISS under the current rules of membership (see Art. 16). All entry fees are to be paid to FISS or the Club holding the event. |
What constitutes permission under 9.1 is not clear. Federations may need to give consent for their racers to race abroad, and up until last year FISS charged a permit fee for this or the racers needed to get an international license. Since the start of this year this has been dropped in return for a small increase in membership fees which means everyone has an international license.
In practice there is no way any federation could be expected to know what other federations rulebooks were on the subject so it was never a requirement from our point of view to check into the permission thing, just to verify that racers were licensed. Therefore we have generally accepted a federation membership card which is not expired for the time the race(s) are being held as "permission." I.e. proof that the skater is a licensed racer. |
