Might be of interest to some - I'm certainly considering it (predominantly from a learning perspective, rather than something that I want to start applying - I still have other basic and more fundamental areas to work on first!):

For those not on sr.com:

A date for your January diaries.....

Skaefresh's first Adanced level workshop in 2010 will take place on Saturday 23rd Janaury from 12pm - 2pm at the Boat House on Serpentine Road.

The workshop will focus on skating faster and mastering the infamous Double Push. This will also include work on acceleration techniques and speed stops. Cost is £20.

After many years of discussing the ins and outs of each and every skate technique out there, I can conclude that the Double Push probably creates more confusion, frustration and eluciveness than most skills. I'd like to try and demystify the Double Push and make sure that it is really that - a second push and identify what is slacking in people's skating that doesn't allow them to acheive the double push effectively (even if they understand it totally in an analytical sense).

Serpentine Road should be nice and quiet end of Jan, perfect for some concentrated work on pushing (twice) and gliding.

Please email me to book Asha@skatefresh.com and make sure I have your phone number. See you then!

That is an ambitious course for sure.

Could be interesting to see how it is approached, I'll put that down as a possibility.

Unlike some in the club, I'm actually all for learning the double push from the skill aspect.  OTOH I would be rather careful about using it in skating and training.  It's too easy to do what Fred and I did and get a massive undercarve, so remember not to use it for almost all of your skating.

Of all the skaters that can do the movement of the double push (and there are far fewer than people think), I know of only a couple who can actually do it efficiently and get useful benefit.  All the short frame skaters I've seen double pushing are just burning extra calories and going slower as a result of the DP.

Mike, I would like to think that the "problem" that people may have about it is that a lot of skaters look at the Double Push as being a quick-win solution to being faster, whereas correcting their core skating skills would probably address that better.

I definitely agree that from a skill's aspect, why shouldn't people learn it, on the basis that you are also taught the applications and limitations.  I've not had any lessons with Asha before but she always has postive reviews from students and other instructors, so I don't think that will be a problem on this course.
I agree with Fred that it is an ambitious course, from the perspective that it might attract people for the wrong reasons - I don't think many realise how advance a skill it is, but am sure they will find out if they go on it :)

For my point of view DP is not needed for others than speed skaters which, and yes you first need to have good control of the skates/body weight to start trying DP.  If this is good level it would be good if most of us can go.

Little plea to keep any debate about it here rather than on the SR thread. Asha is running a business and debates on this topic can go on and on. There are probably some long threads in here already. From my perspective I don't know what Asha's DP credentials are like. Her instructing credentials are very good so she may have done her homework. It might be interesting someone with a keen eye for the DP to go along and see what is happening. Could also be a good recruiting ground for the club so it would be great if one or two attend and at the end ask people if they want to take it further. If they are prepared to pay £20 for 2 hours and want to find their potential then they should be prepared to spend £25 for 12 months.

Anyone want to have a short "training session" to coincide with 2pm on Serp Road. Not aggressive fast just some effortless cruising in blue?

But (and I think this is Mike's point) for some kinds of skater "learn to doublepush" does provide the motivation to acquire these skills - and many of them (better edge control, balance, e.g.) are useful in everyday skating situations - even if not part of the basic classic push, they might help you stay on your feet if somebody trips you or clashes skates with you or whatever

And an underpush is an underpush: I remember many of Eddy (Matzger)'s DP drills being just as good for tightening up crossover underpushes

In case it wasn't obvious, my comments are entirely general and about the DP.

I might attend as well...

I'm always curious about somebody else's point of view and teaching methods, therefore having a session with Asha should be good.

She also mentioned working on "acceleration techniques and speed stops" and that shouldn't be harmful as well Wink

Just realised one thing.
This might overlap with the Sat indoor training.

Is anyone from LSST signed up for this?

Unfortunately I've made other arrangements for the day.

Forgot about it (again)

I dropped an email to Asha to know if there is space available, if it is an option I will try to go.
