Wow, Richard that's seriously impressive, just 18 minutes of Eddy Metzger's winning time - awesome!! It seems you guys had a 10-person strong paceline? Way to go!
But also well done to Naomi, Rick and Ben for finishing this what must be a gruelling race!! |

Brief race report Ouch. First 38 was easier than I remember the next 49 was worse but only because my left boot fits even worse than ever now it is soft and I had a lot of trouble in the climbs, which was most of the time. This course is not flat at any point until you reach the outskirts of Atlanta. Challenging but very rewarding to finish.
Needed to reseat my boot at the penultimate check point but had to ice my foot before getting it back on. Lost about 30 mins there but a big thanks to Candygirl for the assistance. You really need good fitting/comfy boots to do this race. If you have them then it is very doable. Didn't stop after that and overtook Ben at the last check point fiddling with his boots. He went the wrong way earlier and was looking very tired when he reached the checkpoint I was icing up at. I guess he did about 91 of the 87 miles.
Dekalb Avenue needs to be resurfaced so badly that I can't start to express my displeasure. Missed two turns near the end due to traffic obscuring the signs as I danced in between at one and there being no space to make a turn coming off a downhill on the second.
Without new boots I don't think I can go any faster on the 87. Until then I'll have to pass. Might be back in 2012 to do the 38 prior to coast to coast.
Amazingly well done to Richard H at his first attempt. Not sure how he can better that another time. Well done to Nomes for no training and Selena for her class win in the 38. Well done to Richard, Ben and Kai for their efforts too. Shame Bish couldn't make it. |

Thanks George, yes there were 10 or so in the line including the top three women I think. About 8 had formed the core of the line from start to finish with various people joining in and dropping off. Prior to the race that core group had found each other with the common goal of setting a constant sub 5 hour pace for as long as possible. Bit too much wind to have gone faster than 5 hours as it turns out, but we kept that steady pace throughout and everyone took their share of the work.
Several times we merged with the lead pack as they were playing silly buggers and slowing down. For a while I even got to lead the leaders, although very slowly as they were in one of those "someone else can do the work" phases. Thought about going with them when they went off but glad I didn't. Knew I had a solid, reliable, cooperative line. Good decision as we subsequently overtook many burned out lead pack skaters later in the race.
Guess I developed a bit of killer instinct after goodwood - managed to win the sprint at the end and secure 8th place, but there was luck involved of course as well as speed. With 10 in the line it could easily have been 18th place instead with nearly the same time.
As Rick says not sure I can ever beat that now as will depend on weather as well as skill, fitness, etc. not all such factors are within my control!
This would be an awesome event to tackle as a team, my line's performance demonstrated the effectiveness of cooperative pack skating over such a distance very well. Six or seven fast LSST people in a pack could really make an impact on this race. |

Thanks for coming out, guys. I reall enjoyed seeing Naomi and Ben again (Bish, expect to see you next year), and meeting Rick, Richard, Richard, Kai, and Selena.
If you are interested in trying it again next year (our 30th Anniversary), info here:
