back to the office this morning. The marathon was really a great experience. I loved it.
Everyone did so well. We are all happy for each other and that what count. One of my two goal were achieve. i shall work hard until next year to achieve my second goal (be ready mike).
I had no real idea on were the end was so I hold myself back too much. I should have pushed harder. I was still very fresh at the end of the race. |

What a difference a year makes!
Compared to Sept 2004 (rain and wet roads at the start), it is true we had much better conditions for racing. So how to compare? For me 2004 was a superb experience, but this year surpassed it by far! I enjoyed the race so much and felt a lot more relaxed and confident. A lot of this was to do with being in a great mutually supportive LSST mini-paceline for much of the race with Rich, Duracell and Beatrice. We really encouraged each other to push forward whenever the bigger paceline slowed, and managed to step into faster pacelines as they overtook us, so we were constantly moving up the field.
You really get a lot of information from one little championship chip!…. My personal goal was to beat 1:30 this year, so doing 1:22:05 was great. I also moved up from 76th place in my age range in 2004 to 41st place (757th place overall). This put me in the top 11% of men in my age range and in the top 18% of all men finishers.
This sounded OK until I compared it with Beatrice’ position (we finished with exactly the same time) Beatrice did astoundingly well! - She was 18th in her age range and 130th overall, putting her in the top 4% of women in her age range and in the top 7 % of all women finishers. (BTW, I think that ‘Percentile in Age Range’ is a good figure for comparing individual performance.)
As you can see, I’ve had fun looking at figures… I also wanted to see if there was much difference in the ratio of male to female competitors between marathon runners and skaters (looking at this years Berlin finishers). I was amazed to see that females represent 32% of all skaters but only 18% of all runners. Expressed another way, there are two men to every woman in skating but 4 men to every woman in running. I think this much better balance between the sexes says a lot in favour of skating.
Finally, congrats to all LSST members and other Skaters from London – I think everyone improved significantly on their performance this year. It strikes me that it really is a great experience to be in LSST. In our third season we are maturing into a quality speed skating club to rival much more established ones in continental Europe. We now have some truly high performing members as well as many up and coming. Even the oldies like me have made improvements in their times. But the women have been especially strong with enormous gains since 2004. The Berlin weekend was inspirational. Can’t wait for next season!
PS Perhaps someone could replace last year's Berlin results on the LSST homepage with this year's much more impressive results.... Also, extracts from the posts in this string could be edited into a commentary. This would serve as a 'shop window' to encourage new people to join. Berlin really is the high spot of the marathon calendar being so large and yet well organized and friendly – we should encourage more people to come along. |

Who - Rick is treasurer
What - current fee is £25, and if you join after 1st October, you get membership until Dec 2006!
Where - anywhere you can find Rick, but this weekends technique sessions would be a good place - you get them free if you join.
The main one is Saturday 3pm-5pm, £10 for non-members.
There's a free stopping/turning/efficiency one at 12:00 on Sunday
All at the Albert Memorial
Look under the membership tab for all the "benefits" (including skinsuits... ), and there's a pdf membership form there too.

You should be able to find the results in the ergebnisse/results (3rd) section.
Look for:
Inline-Skater
search the bottom of the last page of each "Manner" (Men) and "Frauen" (Women) AK (M/WJA - M/W80) list.
It's a bit of work. (that I have already done for you...)
The total registered skaters was on the news section of the site. |

| Got that lot on Sunday night. What I am looking for now if anyone can help is the doppel-starter results to see how Roger got on compared to the others. I don't know if there was a prize for that but i'd have though he might be in the "running" |

I found this really interesting!... (enough to even make a pretty graph of it!)
Check out the age distribution of the people in the marathon, well specifically the guys. Amazing that the number of 35-45 year olds is actually double that of 20-35! Even though that's a bigger age range. hmmm - interesting point to be researched about marketing for LIM maybe?
