you were only 40 mins or so behind me... it got dark very quickly. I don't remember seeing headlights on the road... |

Does anyone Know how KAY BETTIS did in the Running Marathon on the Sunday.

The results from the double starters:

Kay was actually looking quite strong at the end of the marathon and could probably have gone a bit faster, but she waited for me and helped me make it to the end.
It was a hard weekend for me. The skate was much harder than I had expected. I struggled throughout the skate, but up to 30km I was doing alright, in a reasonable paceline; then someone fell in front and I went over the top of them - I rolled over and started to sit up, only to see someone barrelling in on top of me. It was a scary moment, but I was remarkably unscathed. After the fall I had lost the paceline, but I had also lost the will, my bearings had begun to seize, and I struggled to drag myself to the end. Kay also fell during the skate, also without injury, but picked herself up and finished well (top 12% in her category).
After the skate I felt bad, dreading the run, but a good feed and plenty of sleep left me feeling OK in the morning.
The run went well initially, the weather was good, the crowds were encouraging, and there was music of every sort around the course. Given how hard the skate had been our only ambition was to get around, so we settled into an easy pace, with the occasional walk break at the water stops. At the 3 hour mark I was feeling surprisingly strong, but 45 minutes later everything had caught up with me, and the final hour was a painful shuffle. Fortunately Kay was still with me, and encouraged me through the pain.

Brilliant effort Roger and Kay!
Btw - Peter, Sol, Markus - have you come across that picture of us taken by a professional photographer at the finish? Did she give any of you a website to look at?
Congrats to Fred and Greazer for their amazing results: in top 1.9% and 0.7% respectively! |

I've found the pic taken of the four of us (Sol, Markus me and Peter) after we have collected our finisher medals. It looks good (except that maybe it is possible to discern the early stages of hypothermia!). I'm not sure if everyone else in the group is showing a complete number, so maybe you have not been able to locate this photo? Happy memories!
