Congratulations to all of you guys. Seeing the times I suppose the weather was bad ? Or have there been other problems
Just read that at another race this weekend in Germany there were some tanks driving on the road... |

Hans had no cramp but Fred suffered a bit. It was very slippery out there as it had rained most of the night. There were some dry patches in the last half but it was mostly wet but it didn't rain during the race. It was also rather cold. It's not a quick marathon anyway. Hans being a minute slower was actually a significant improvement since the winning time was about 10 minutes slower. You don't come in 25th if you have a fitness problem. My place in category is wrong because they misread my 7 as a 1 at the end of my DoB so put me in the 40+ grouping. Gav's wrong too. He was listed as M30 but shuld have been M20 so he was 9th in category meaning he wasn't beaten by a bunch of old people. Assuming everything else is correct then I was 53rd in category M30 out of 146
Gav 9th/48
Hans 10th/146
Fred 57/146
Ray 34/65
By last year's points system, Hans is the clear winner. He knew he was going to have a good year in his new age group this year.
There were 636 finishers in total. More than 800 registered before the booklet was published. |

I have to admit that I don't like wet, but it wasn't too bad in the end, I've been strugling with my carve muscles again (tibialis anterior ), I skated 40 kilometers with some sort of contracture at both legs and it was very unpleasant... but at least I finished
I've to add that I haven't been very sensible the day before ( for a change)
But I enjoyed the week end, I had my feet moulded for my next skates, it was my first marathon in Germany and I like the way people are cheering along the race. |

May be worth to contact them if results are incorrect (and you can show they are wrong).
When I went, they put my finish time as 1:50ish whereas it was 1:41...... and they did correct it after I contacted them. |

Hey that's interesting... on a google search for "duisburg marathon" this topic comes up 2nd
I was pretty happy with my race. Worked hard in the wet to stick with the front guys until about 25km, and then it was Thorsten Oltmer (Bjorn's brother, sardinia instructor) and myself, with him leading pretty much for 10km! That guy is a machine! I almost felt bad nipping him on the final sprint |

Well that was half a fun race - I started in a paceline with Rick and about 15 others, we were coping pretty well with the very wet road surface - after a few miles we passed Fred and he jumped on the back - I felt pretty strong and Rick and I each had a couple of long stints at the front.
But as we approached the half way point things stared to go wrong for me - my back started knotting up and changes of posture didn't seem to do any good - then we came to a big bridge and trying to increase power my back was agony - so I slowed up and saw the paceline drift away from me. I kept going but I think the second half took me about an hour.
But I was well pleased at the finish to learn that Gav and Hans had got 11th and 25th - and thoroughly enjoyed the celebratory steak - sizzling on a heated stone and done English style - (the options were well done, medium or English) |
