God I look so fat in those photos.  Sad

However, I am very happy that in all the ones I am in, and that is quite a few, I never have two skates in contact with the road. So I am not wasting any of that weight.  Smile

I seem to remember crossing over on every single corner and never had to sprint to close any gaps after the bend.

Dan in the last turn

Hmm.  Every time I get photgraphed is when I'm hanging off the back of a line and doing something gumbieish with my arms.

(See, I thought there were more people than that behind me at that point - looks like I was even further back than I thought)

with the tailwind we were doing speeds of 36-37k (according to my GPS) and it didn't even feel like work.  Once we turned into the wind it slowed down a lot, though - right down to 26k on some of the exposed bits.

Wow, that is a lot of speed comparing tailwind to headwind. I've had the feeling that the speed went down a lot but 10k is hard...

10k difference between times I looked at my wrist, not between average speeds, it seems.  I just downloaded the points to computer and came up with this: you can definitely see the difference at about 9:45 (10:45 local time, of course) but I don't think there's 10k in it.

About 10km sound about right. 24km to go mark came up for our line at 30mins dead = 36kph average assuming it was 18km gone.
Last 24km took 54mins = 26.67kph average

I suspect your group slowed down less. I doubt there was a big margin after 18km a minute or two as when we watched you disappearing you weren't noticably pulling away. You were in sight for most of the that distance. However, you were 7 minutes ahead at the end so you probably did the last 24km 5 to 6 minutes faster. For 6 minutes faster that would be about 30kph average for that bit. It's not science so the margins for error are around max 5%.
