Yes, I did it! I skated a marathon on the icerink in Enschede. And allthough the results (not online yet) don't show it. I actualy finished third.
The race was over 50 laps. With som 15 laps to go I placed a jump leaving the pack half a track behind.
With some three to go I was cought by one skater and a lap later by another. With one lap to go I was sprinting to the finishline taking the third place.
But then we discovered the man counting the laps and handeling the lap sign made a mistake. For the second time there was one lap to go.
One lap later I finished at the 6th or 7th place.
After filing a compliant the outcome was that 1) The lap counter said he had done nothing wrong. 2) There were no recordings (and thus results) at the previous laps.
Well I still got my transponder data showing that I did 51 laps. So I actualy finished third

You've done lap board Alan. It can be tough sometimes, especially when there are a lot of laps. Had one at the champs this year in the Junior 1,000m. Very quick time race didn't look that fast and I questioned the finish time. There was a bit of debate but I did a bit of looking up and said the time recorded was 4 seconds faster than Jorge Botero's long standing Senior Mens record for the distance. That settled it. Lap board was accidentally double flipped. Nobody noticed. Result stood but the time couldn't.
Had another lap board story a few years ago on the LIM when DJ Nation and Ben Alchin came over. Had some half blind officials shouting at Derek on the Lap board that he missed them coming round as a couple of skaters from Fred's Paris Hockey club had split from their line and were also wearing black with white trimming. Derek flipped the board despite not believing it and we managed to correct the board and shouted to the skaters who thought they had a lap to go that there were two more. After that I introduced the sheets with the times for each lap on them so we can spot anomally laps early for the leaders.
Sorry to say AJ but you got to race to the board and what the officials give. If there's no bell and that lap board doesn't say 0 then you keep going. Quite a few friends have found out to their cost and still skate a safety lap. Shame they couldn't count back on the transponders though. Well done. |
