Well what can I say --- YOU GUYS WERE AWESOME!!!
You ate up those laps up even when it hurt and it was a privilege and an honour to captain you. You all kept fighting for that podium, without complaining, supported each other and I know that you all pushed yourselves beyond your own limits to make sure we got on that podium.
Over the last weekend we:
* Got on the podium and coming away with bling
* 9th on scratch with a team of 5 in our first ever outing
* Came within 2 laps of what is probably the best French skate club - who had set their other teams up to support their endurance skaters
* Lapped third place so comprehensively we could have stopped skating half an hour before the end and still kept our second place
You guys are all amazing and i am really proud of the work we did last weekend. We had a plan that we executed, we all made sacrifices and pushed harder in that heat than we all thought possible. Our stats were:
Average lap : 07:55
Fastest Lap : 07:01
Slowest Lap : 09:00
The enduro class of 2010 - I salute you
James - You have a lot of talent and your last four back to back laps of 07:23, 07:19, 07:18 and 08:21 were stupendous - should have given you 5 laps
Garan - just kept punching out those fast laps and did not complain when you had to pick up some extra strain when we were sorting out that penalty lap
Errol - High watermark to set for your first time in Le Mans dude you kept on going like a train and were always solid
Fred - I know you were hurting all the time, but didnt complain or try to kill me when i kept demanding faster and faster lap times
Gentlemen if you could all take some time to put together your race reports so the others can share our experiences.

Impressed is not the word with your performances. A much-deserved well done to you all. I also heard it was James's second 24 hour race in as many weekends - nutter!
I look forward to hear what your plans are for next year

Heys Hans
Thanks for the kind words.
As you said, it was my first time competing at this (hellish and hot) event so doing it in a team with such an experienced captain as yourself really helped.
You forgot to mention how fantastic your performance was too. Every time you got even a little sniff of one of our nearest competitors, you went after them and usually beat them to a pulp (in a sporting sense of course)
I will admit that I made a whole load of mistakes with regards to my preperations but yourself, James, Fred and Garan were such strong team mates, it encouraged me to raise my game every time I felt like melting.
Thanks for letting me skate with you. Thanks to all of the pit crews for the support and a massive thanks to Fred, Ed and everyone from LSST who was there. I didn't know many of you before the event but you made me feel like one of your own.
It would be a pleasure to skate with you all again.
Keep rolling guys!

My race report:
I was pretty apprehensive about the 5-man event. I knew I'd have to be doing a bunch more laps than last time I did Le Mans in 2006, and I had no way of knowing if I'd last the distance. I also knew that competition for the team had been pretty tight and I didn't want to let everyone else down and not justify my place.
The team was great. Hans, you did a fantastic job leading us and giving us the confidence to perform. Errol, Fred and James were epic on the track.
5 man is fairly full on (obviously nothing like the Duo or Solo), but it is great fun.
On the plus side:
1. I was shocked when we first learned, towards evening, that we were in 4th place, 13th overall or thereabouts, and I immediately started thinking of 3rd place... that feeling of starting the hunt for the podium was a great!
2. Dropping the 5016 team on the hill was a great buzz, which should have moved us to 3rd (I think?) but we had to wait to morning until Hans and Fred had words with the organisers.... and suddenly we jump to 2nd!
3. I felt so much more confident on the track than 2006, able to jump on passing fast people and use other people more effectively. In 2006 I hardly got a draft, this year I was always thinking and looking around.
4. I really enjoyed the 3-4 man shifts, getting 16 mins off, 24 mins off. Enough to recover but not so much you got stiff again. I think the 5 man is a great format in that respect. As for the 2 man shift...
5. Getting some LSST draft from the open team in the final laps - thanks dudes!
On the down side:
1. That hill was a killer. I could and should have done more preparation for it. Towards the end I was losing bags of time on it. More training on that needed for me this winter!
2. Wish I tried a sprint lap early on: We were all so worried about conserving energy, but it would have been nice to really go for it on one and see what time I could have got.
3. Shouldn't have just sat on 5005 (winners) in one of the final laps - we both just freewheeled the whole way and it will have ruined my averages!
4. Sorry to Errol for the late night hand-over miss!!
All in, Enduro was a fantastic experience, and Le Mans is really such a fantastic event. |
