Just read this

Chains:
Chain length can be adjusted when you fit it but the width has to be correct. 7 and 8-speed chains are the same width but 9-speed ones are narrower, with 10-speed narrower again. Choose the right one to match your gear system. You can use a SRAM (Sachs/Sedis) chain with a Shimano gear system - in fact, most people do! When you join a Shimano chain, you must use a new replacement connecting pin. If you change your chain, you must replace the cassette sprockets at the same time or the new chain will skip over them under load. |
I guess that would explain why we had so much trouble, but at least we proved it to not be 100% necessary! |

| There are third-party replaceable replacement pins for Shimano chains which work pretty well. I don't know if you were using one of them or if you were trying to rejoin the chain using a chainlink extractor, though |

errr, Mike, that was the problem......most people don't carry a 'pack'
Fortunately my old Topeak Chain Link Extractor and a bit of 'experience' from Rick and I managed to get us by.
Anyway, thanks for the advice, I am def looking to get some powerlink's for my pack (the rest of you please note ) |

I met one of those today, he didn't have a spare tube or a p$$ct&re repair kit, so I lent him mine, else he'd have been fcuked. Get a proper set of spares and tools, not just for yourself, but for other cyclists who didn't plan ahead properly.
What's in my kit?
2 x spare inner tubes
4 x cable ties
Couple of pairs of plastic gloves to keep your hands clean
Spare short length of 9 speed chain
Couple of powerlinks
Spoke key
Alien multi-tool
P$nc$"re repair kit
Pump
Park tyre boots |
