I can only comment on the roads around where I grew up (Bishop's Stortford, Manuden, Berdern, Clavering). Many of the minor roads have a very bad surface and they are quite often sunken by about 2m, making corners pretty treacherous.

Gee it looks like another  LCST outing Laughing  I might well be up for both the reccie and the main event.

Not sure whether that will be on skates or in a cycling support capacity (particularly if the surface is iffy!

Here is a route suggestion for you:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=de&msa=0&msid=113462776544084032190.000439645d5e650210dbd&ll=51.723626,-0.071754&spn=0.132708,0.314484&z=12&om=1

from Potters Bar to Cambridge.

The section from Stevenage to Cambridge I am very familiar with, though I usually cycle it the other way.  There is only one particularly dodgy hill that I can recall, just after Cromer.  Its steep, narrow and gravelly, but if you meet no traffic there is a long run-out.  There are also a couple of sections of poor surface after Barley.

The section  north of Potters Bar should be fairly quiet once you leave the A1000.

The section that I cannot remember is between the A414 and the A612, but I have put in what I think is a viable route.

Tempting to reccie it on a bike if I wasn't working Sunday. I am getting back into riding at the moment to convince my knees they should bend before Berlin. Could possibly do saturday. Not much chance of doing it in October though.

1st weekend Cologne
2nd weekend Wrong Skaters Tour to Blackpool
3rd & 4th weekends possible level 2 BRSF course

If I get my bike before this week end I might also join on the reccy but seriously, isn't 3pm a bit late?

London Cambridge bike ride is 50 miles. It was 56 when it started in Picketts lock. 280km would get you from London to Cambrisge to Oxford and back to London.

maybe.  i was going to richmond in the morning, so wanted to get back and eat.  80km on a bike shouldn't take more than four hours ... so finish at 7pm ... still an hour before dark.  could be convienced to move it to one/two!  then we would have three/four hours and could stop for coffee Smile

Ray u coming? i know its not enfield but ........

has anyone ever skated along the lee valley reservoires?
if yes from where and how far is doable. Is it nice?

Marion and I did a bike ride along the canal/reservoirs northbound of the ice rink. All the path are not skateable, proper dirt trail paths at times, not even nice unless you are on a mountain bike.

Hey whilst I don't think we should be looking at a 280km route check, I can't help thinking 3pm Sat is setting off too late. I would rather see it moved to either Sat or (if you have Richmond commitments) Sun but with an early morning start.

I think its inevitable we will be stopping at various junctions and possibly even backtracking to mark a route, plus there is always the potential hiccup (puncture Tanya?) which could add to the time. Leaving so late leaves no redundancy whatever

By the way, I thought Roger's starting suggestion for a route was great.....straight!!! I guess we just need to check the surface etc
