I think the surfaces were almost exactly the same as the past two years.
First year I did this was on freeride skates which were obviously reasonably comfy but slower. Last year I did it on the Bonts and assumed that the pain was down to not having the skates fitted/molded properly. At that time I'd never managed to skate for a long time on any surface without eventual pain.
This year however I know my skates were right because I had no pain during all of Le Mans, yet at the end of the L2C ride my feet were really quite sore. It's the vibration of the rough surfaces that does it no doubt.
Last year it took 4hr13 with zero stoppage, this year 4hr15 with about 10 or 12 minutes of stoppage. On the whole then, even though I'm a lot better skater now, not much faster. Heck of a head wind might have contributed to that. Difficult to see how this can be any easier or better with the roads as rough as they are.
Perversly I do actually really enjoy it and never really have thoughts about stopping or doubts about making it to the end. Only thing is ... the foot pain sucks. It's probably enough to make me stop doing this on racing skates. And since doing it on slower less capable skates is a bit uninteresting I reckon my X2X days, within the UK at least, might be coming to an end. |
