After much discussion with people on sunday in Berlin, we decided it would be fun if I put on a rather different speed skating technique session. Its how I improved my speed, as opposed to conventional methods.

It wont be teaching speed technique.

That would be teaching you to suck eggs, and I think most of you know more theory on that subject than I do. This would be about becoming *able* to implement the changes and techniques that you already know you need to. Key skills basically - the bits that help Quentin & I out.

It would require full pads (compulsory) including elbows - though helmets are up to you. And also your shortest skates - preferably freestyle skates. Rockered too. though if they are not rockered, arrive 15 mins early so I can sort them out on the day. Freestyle skates WILL help you to learn faster, and you WILL be able to translate your skills over onto your speed skates with ease. it is the quickest route to the skills that you are after. (it isnt a freestyle session).

it wont be a nice or pleasant session. it will be very hardwork (discomfort - not strength), involve probably a little bit of falling, and may damage your skates superficially (if you are precious about your frames, I can modify what I ask of you).

I envisage 2 hours, and though Id love to make it free to members, I live off my earnings now, so Im going to charge £5 for the 2 hr session as it would be on a weekend. (the usual £20 for non-members though).

How does that sound? who would be interested?

I was thinking sat 14th in the afternoon, but Mike suggested 21st instead? when is good?

Got an old set of Rollerblades aero65i. Hopefully they'll be up for the job.

Both dates are fine for me

14th it is then.

Mike cant do the 14th, but Tanya was 'instrumental' in the conception of this session. it all started with 'Mike could do with having his front wheels removed for a good hour or so - hell, he'd soon learn how to skate proper' followed by 'oooh!!!!! fun!!!!' from Tanya.

no, Tanya, not fun. very painful... but lets do it anyway.

Dude, don't blame me ... I don't want them to hate me (or do I), when they are in tears.

Those that where really active on Sunday, will understand what this session is about, those that actually stopped eating and left the table may wonder so...

…basically (please correct me if I'm wrong), the session will aim to give you a feel for what you need to achieve whilst on speed skates (although it will be done in rec boots), it will focus on balance and weight distribution in the skates/push.  Naomi (in her magic book) has a better course outline but the aim is to build up comfort about edges control and the feeling of what we are trying to achieve in speed boots.

I personally did a bit of slalom the other day, after not doing much for months and felt the transition back (due to better muscle, ankle control) was easier after speed skating practise this summer.  I would also concur that the skills that can be learnt out of speed boots can be helpful, to very useful (as illustrated by Q&N this weekend).

I also think Naomi would enjoy practising the coaching techniques she learnt on the plane (courteous of Samuel L Jackson)

I'm pretty sure Duracell & I are available on the 14th. I'll check at home, but please count us in.

I have some very small agro wheels that can be used to replace front wheels to stop frames grounding.

so do I. ive got loads. & bearings for them too to ease change. but they will reduce discipline, so I dont plan to use them much.

Interesting? This is just too good to miss Twisted Evil

I want in please Naomi.

I have several 'worn' 76mm and 80mm wheels if you need some for rockering. Also are we still up for the Richmond session in the morning that was being tentatively arranged?
