Bad news - the next spring Hamburg marathon (scheduled for April 23rd, 2006) seems not to have a skating competition any more. This was published by a big newspaper today.
The reason given is that with 500 entries last year the cost could not be covered.
Well Hamburg was expensive anyway There'll be something else on the calendar next year... And there still is a skating half marathon and an inline marathon run in Hamburg (coming up October 2nd!). |

Oh what a pity
This would have been the only real marathon for my family to watch...
Maybe the organisation will think about it again... |

No hope! They don't want skaters. And they can't even count. Mr. Götz said something about 500 finishers - and I don't think the new sponsor cares, I think they want Julio Rey, the Kenia Express and thousands of runners who don't care if the get lost in the potholes in Hamburg. |

| Kind of the beginning of the end when they lost their WIC Grand Prix status but they were the masters champs this year so I thought it might pick up but that many skaters is bad for a race that was looking to have 2000 two years ago. I hope we don't lose too many more. We already lost Bonn this year. There are only a few that we can enter without german bank accounts and only one left in the early season now I think (Duisberg) |

Just had a look at the 2005 results list. That one has a total of 845 finishers, among them 172 women. Adding a good 20% of people who entered but did not race for whatever reason, this is more than double than they claimed to have.
Well, there are loads of other competitions and the smaller events will cause you less trouble in paying even if no credit cards allowed. And maybe you can ask German team mates |

| I was gonna say - if there were only 500 skaters there, then my position overall of about 550 ish seems to be rather poor... |

Mmm paradox...and about as poor as my finish positions will have to be good to climb up the marathon rankings significantly. I think I need to cross the finish line in about -50th place. 1st place just isn't going to cut it. |

Sad about having lost another marathon, but... The organizers of the Olympus Hamburg Marathon 2005 have done a VERY good job of showing us they don't really want us there! It's ridiculous that they claim "only 500 skaters" entered, it is yet more proof that they only want runners.
If you want to know the whole story, look up Jonathan Seutter's posts about it at racereports.net and bont.com forums. |
