Hello all, I'm Hooligal and I skate with the london rockin rollers, a roller derby team. I'd like to fire a few questions at you:
What does the speed skating world think of roller derby? I realize its an entirely different discipline, but there is obviously alot of crossover, especially with some speed skaters such as Atomatrix (Julie Glass) and racer mcchaser becoming big names in the derby world. do you guys find derby exciting? Skilled/Unskilled? An interesting new discipline? Wish we wore inlines? Think we're all a bunch of nutters on wheels?
Also we've been looking for sometime to improve our skating with speed skating technique. If some of us came to tatem park on a sunday would we be shunned for being quad skaters? Would people be happy to help us? do we have to become members of LSST? etc. Sorry if these questions have been asked before! |

We have a few derby girls on the street skates and that come to the goodward marathon. I think it looks tough to skate outside on quads

I'd like to see it before i make a generic statement (which I've been thinking about doing but haven't fitted it in yet). I guess i think it seems less about skating and more about dressing up - although the amount of lycra i wear i can't really comment.

then you would just be speed skaters.

no you wouldn't be shunned for being on quads, we shun everyone!
interestingly enough we were talking about new indoor venues and stuff, we need to find a space to train in. I see you use a school in Kilburn / earls court. which I guess must be of a suitable size etc. We might be able to move a training session in your direction over winter if they have available slots to book... might kill two birds. you get another night to train speed we get an indoor venue.
p.s technique is a little different but i'm sue our drills would help. |

Where does that leave quad speed skaters?
In 4 years I've not seen any anti-quadness from inliners, nothing to worry about there. I wish I could play with mine more, but just never get around to it. |

Welcome to the forum, Hooligal!

What, a bunch of people on wheels, going round in circles, oddly dressed, and with the odd skater hitting the floor? Hmm...that sounds familiar

I've not seen enough to comment

Definitely skilled

I don't think that would make a difference.

No more than the rest of us
With regards to your questions on training at Tatem:

As Tanya implied, absolutely! Of course, I'm kidding - although if you come along in your Derby gear, then it will definitely be a different sight to what we're used to first thing on a Sunday morning.

As you can probably guess, we're all doing our "thing" on inlines, with a small number of people who have some background with skating on quads. One of our coaches, Adrian Wordsworth, is one of those people, who I believe has helped you out in the past.
Other than Adrian, I don't think we would have anyone with quad specific knowledge to help coach, although that's not to say we wouldn't be able to help (I've been told the basics aren't too different).

Yes and no. We welcome people to come along to Tatem (helmet is compulsory if taking part) to see whether or not it's something they feel they could benefit from. If after a couple of sessions you feel it's something you would like to come to again, then yes, we would ask you to join the club - Adrian dedicates a lot of time and effort to coach our members.
With that in mind, we do need to consider are the numbers that come to a given training session, and ensuring that we have enough coaches / coaching assistants available to run the session. Any ideas how many would be interested in coming along, and how frequently? During the winter period, Tatem training sessions are run on Sunday mornings @ 10am.
Outside of this time, the track is available to use should you want to make use of it.
Lastly, I guess it would be useful to know what exactly is it that you would hope to gain from our training sessions. This is probably best discussed with Adrian, who has offered to get in touch with you directly (if he hasn't already).
It might be an idea for you and whoever else is interested to come along to a session where Adrian will also be there, meet a few of us, take part (don't forget a helmet) and we can see if it's mutually beneficial.
There is usually a post on the Training on the Friday / Saturday before, to see who is coming along. Please let us know in advance when you would intend to come along, so that we can put on our "Sunday best".
Note that:
- the following weekend (10/10 & 11/10) is the British Outdoor Championships, which you'd be welcome to come along and spectate

If you guys want to come see some derby you are all more then welcome, we are playing a game in bethnal green (york hall) nov 21st, against birmingham. While yes, theres a bunch of dressing up, we also have quite a handful of skilled skaters, one of the best known probably being Von Bitch who works at Skate Attack.
We don't use a school in kilburn (other London team does I think!) but we do use a hall in Earls Court convenion center, also a school in chalk farm. We may be able to work some sort of something out, wha sort of size do you need? We are very apt at finding the elusive skater friendly large venue!!
And I've recieved a pm from adrian which makes me glad because we had lost his contact info for some while now and I wanted to get him back in for our training sessions.
Boo to no training for the next 2 sundays, I will try to get to the one after that, I'll be sure to let you know. And dont worry I never forget my helmet..and kneepads, elbow pads, wristguards....
