The first German Blade Challenge race this season. Four laps in OK conditions.
The winners:
1 - Grandgirard Mathieu Creative-Rollerblade Germany (Wien) FRA 1:07:47.74
2 - Zschätzsch Daniel Creative-Rollerblade Germany Blau-Gelb Gross-Gerau GER 1:07:47.86
3 - Schwierz Matthias ZEPTO Skate Team Tuttl. Sportfreunde GER 1:07:47.96
Gav finished in the lead pack and skated a new personal record time (as far as I know...) !!!
43 - Pollock Gavin Team Experts in Speed London Skater GBR 1:07:53.08
I had a bad day...
117 - Huizinga Andreas London Skater NED 1:28:10.24
Not to mention "missing" one of the first turns (and with that the pack...) and one of the last turns (org. forgot to take the half marathon signs off the course, missed my group sprint).
All in all it was a nice first marathon of the season though. Our small group worked together hard to avoid 1:30+ times.
Just got to make sure I get more training done, don't get a cold in the week before a race and hope my new boots will be here on tuesday (my ankles are killing me!!!)
Cheers,
Andy. |

Hi folks,
seen Gav's result from Wilhelmshaven GBC marathon? 1:07:xx - finishing in the lead pack!
It was a great weekend at the North Sea shores. Michi and I did a nice "discovery skate" on Saturday (well, missed out the first bit as it was wet and we decided driving to the first break and having Cappucino was better ) Then watched the kids race and the team time trials in the evening. Much fun with Sebby and a bunch of kids in one of the corners... great kids, totally crazy about autographs from "the blue guys". So the Experts guys and the LSST jackets were quite famous...
Some Pics can be found here (sorry site is still under construction). |

Blimey Gav. That's a major result. First time finishing in the front pack and a new PB. Now you just need to learn how to sprint |

Now who played topic merger here, hmmm?
Did not know that you were around as well greazer - did not see you on Saturday.
Well there were only about 200 starters, and more than 60 skaters in the lead pack, so it must have been pretty deserted further down. Stephan from Bremen, who did 1:30 in Berlin, only had 1:44. |

Amazing result Gav - really up there with the big boys - you've fully justified your place in the Experts team.
And well done Greazer nice to have you skating for us! |

Yeah! If you somehow dropped out of the lead pack it was a tough one...
Doing almost the full marathon in a hard working 4-7 man group was a new experience for me, and a good one! I don't think I would have been able to finish it if I was all alone... (to be honest) |

Needless to say, I am EXTREMELY STOKED about my result
What an absolutely fantastic weekend. Was a little bummed when the pace of the team time trial was so fast that 3 of us 7 had been dropped by the core team (Ollie, Tilo, Michael and Bjorn) after 2.5 of the 8 laps... (I was the last to be dropped tho ) But the main problem was a super fast 'warmup' by the super experienced guys - with me skating along thinking that their warmup pace was my race pace!!
But then the marathon itself on the sunday was fantastic. Having all 7 of us in the lines made such a massive difference to the way you can race. Having team mates at different points in the line meant hopping from one the other became a much simpler task than usual. The race itself was a 10km loop with some really smooth road, a fairly large number of turns (12 I think, including one hairpin that got almost everyone by suprise on the 1st lap!!), and one bridge which was the only hill and attacked on almost every lap.
There weren't a lot of major attacks by anyone during the race, but it was a consistently high pace the entire time. That combined with almost half the track being pretty narrow (just fitting 3 lines), meant that positioning in the pack was super important. I learnt my lesson that you need to focus on moving up and not getting complacent at anytime, as I was nearly dropped off the back twice - but with major efforts managed to hang on and move back up. Another lesson, in tight courses, with more than 2 pacelines, never stay in the middle ones. You get boxed in... make sure that you are on the outside! Thanks Ruhne! (my danish team mate, who pulled me and kept me in there for at least 1 lap of the race).
By the time we got to the finish I was so happy that I had managed to stay in the pack (and just focusing on making sure I didn't get dropped at that stage when the pace started increasing!) that I didn't pay enough attention to moving up the lines near the end. It's very hard getting anywhere in the final sprint when you're too far back to begin with! (lesson 3).
All in all, a super weekend. The team had such a great time, and most of all every one of us had such a laugh and a fun time! |

Oha ! I didn't know that almost all of the girls in the team have been recruited from the Barclay Card-Inlion Girls Team. I am impressed by Sebi's line-up!
And .... Congratulations Gav on that marathon time. |
