Have a look at a post from XSFred on the puc forum...
The photofinish is impressive:
The winning girl is the one doing the split in the background as it's the skate that does count.

For those racing seriously, I guess this is a skill that you must learn.
On a side note, I noticed at Fiss meetings that there are no photo finish. In a finish like the one in the picture, I'm pretty sure that the wrong winner would have been choosen. Would a simple camcorder on a tripod be sufficient to help checking results? Rick, as a judge how hard is it for you to make the right call in a race?

Nice lunge. These often result in a stack after crossing the line. Don't try it an the LIM or the rise on the mats will take you out and they are rough to crash on. Someone tried it in 2003 in the half marathon and had to be carried off.
FISS use three finishing judges and if there is a dispute then we vote. It rare that there is a disagreement. We look at the line and whether the front skate is in contact with the surface or not. This one looks to be clear cut. No need to a photo as there is practically a skate length between the finishers. The times it is difficult is when the lunge is timed that it is going past when the other skaters skate reaches the line. For that situation, without a photo at the exact instant that the line is crossed or high speed video with instant frame by frame replay, then a vote situation exists. If it looks like a dead heat most likely it will be given to the non-lunging skater.
If the skate is not in contact then it doesn't count. I have seen skaters waggling a skate in the air out in front and if they had just put it on the ground then they would have one the race. Only one wheel of the skate needs to be in contact when crossing the line it doesn't have to be the first one but the tip of the skate counts. IIRC, maximum skate length is 500mm including wheels so a 5*99mm would be possible but not 5*100 as the space between wheels would take it over 500mm. That would give the best advantage here. |
