Thursday: my first ever Pilates class

Tell us more (afterwards, for preference).  From the little I know it sounds like it's all about core strength.

I'll post a note after Thursday.

Tell on ...

(I just noticed that the Yoga place around the corner from my flat also does a Pilates class, though I'm guessing it's just matwork and none of the fancy torture machines)

No torture machines, fancy or otherwise at my session.  It was a one on one session with a personal instructor.  It lasted an hour (£50) and consisted of stuff on a mat mostly, but some stuff against the wall.  You could do this stuff at home.  For me, I'm more easily motivated by attending a class.  You can attend a "drop in" class for £5, which I should do.

My instructor suggested that Pilates really is the kind of thing that would benefit me (but then she would say that, wouldn't she).  I'm inclined to believe her though.

In short Pilates appears to me as smart stretching.  That is focusing specifically on certain muscles and equally focusing on relaxing everything else.  Add in a few breathing rules and Bob's your uncle!

I'm concerned that my lower back suffers from time to time!  This is the main driver for my interest.

Here's a bit from my leaflet:
It combines stretching and strengthening techniques to help rebalance specific muscular groups. Small precise movements activate the deep core abdominal and back muscles promoting a strong and stable centre and increased postural awareness
