I've dusted off my 10yr old Cannondale and have been for a number of rides in the park, thanks to living just down the road from Richmond now.

Has anyone had any experience of doing a big ride in the mountains? I have been reading various reports and blogs on the Raid Pyrenean and the Raid Alpine and I have to say I am really tempted to do it, probably Sep 2012, probably the Raid Pyrenean.

You can make your own way, but there are a host of companies who offer supported rides too: eg http://www.marmot-tours.co.uk/Road-Cycling-Holidays/raid-pyrenean.html

It's not cheap to do it this way (understatement) but does sound completely epic. I'd probably need a new bike before I did it too, and would need to get a lot more miles under my belt!

It would definitely be a motivator for getting the cycling miles in and would set you up for an awesome winter training. Might help me shift a few pounds too.

Anyone interested? Twisted Evil

Sounds amazing...I'll register interest for a 2012 attempt.  Will probably need to lost a bit more weight in the meantime.

I kind of hope to offer my house as a base in 2012 for skating/cycling in the alps....

Loads of good stuff to do around...

But first I must finish building it Smile

We did this high-mountains tour last year (sorry only in German) http://www.quaeldich.de/touren/dreilaendertour/

This was the second time we did this tour - so we liked it!

It is run by a group of hotels who arrange for your luggage to be transported between them, so you can travel really light.

The good thing is that each day there are A, B, C route options.  If you take the C option then it is similar to the Raid Pyrennaean - about 3000m vertical each day.  We did B or C most days - and somedays I did C and Kay did B.  But one day we did the A option because the weather was miserable - and cycling over high Alpine passes in heavy rain is absolutely no fun.

The Raid trips sound like a really great route, and if the weather is good it should be quite achievable with a good base of training.

You might also consider the Race Across the Alps (http://www.raceacrossthealps.at/index,lang__en.html) - its kind of similar in toughness to a Raid but you compete in teams of 2 and there are 500 teams taking part and the roads are partially closed.  A colleague of mine in Cambridge did it last year and had a fantastic time - though you have to do more self-organising.  He managed to train for it mainly on  the roads around Cambridge - which goes to show you don't need mountains to train for the mountains.
