Venue - Tatem Park 227m banked oval where many FISS events are held each year. If you want to have a crack at short track racing this is the place to train. Parking is free just outside. It is located on the North East corner of the junction of the A10 and North Circular (A406) on the Palmers Green Road. Facilities toilets and a shelter plus a few seats. Playgound for kids not into skating if you want to bring the family along. No food and drink available so bring your own.
Training times: Every dry Tuesday in British Summer Time from 7pm until dark. Some Sundays mornings too. Check the training threads on this forum for week to week details.
Type of training. Track race practice. Paceline racing (drafting) aerobic and fat burning and relay practice. Coach led.

Was playing with this while trying to find sensible ways to get to Tatem: the TfL site is massively finicky, but recognises it as "station or stop", "edmonton/cambridge roundabout". Anyway, having found that once, they have a tool such that we can add it as a link for anyone else who wants to

I know the site already goes into detail about bus numbers and stuff, but might be useful for anyone who wants a cycling route or a walking route. And it's hooked up with all their realtime information gubbins |
Venue - Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens. Not much need to say about this place. You all know where it is and what is there.
Training Times: Free Parking just outside on Sundays so training sessions are on Sundays. More detailed times are ad hoc. In the summer there is no speed training here to the number of other park users making it dangerous.
Type of training: There is no more organised speed work in the park only Technique training. Coach led technique sessions are organised to focus on different areas of skating. See the training threads for details of what and when.
Venue - Richmond Park. Hill training and distance work weekends or weekdays. If driving park outside the park on Weekdays and skate until after the road is closed to motor vehicles you can get an uninterrupted long skate with hills on surfaces ranging from reasonable to pretty good. A full lap of the park with the cars is a bit over 10km and there are certain tracks which are almost exactly 1.5km. These tracks are mostly free of vehicles. Weekends you can park in the car parks for free. For Weekdays we meet at Sheen Gate. Those with cars park just outside as it is possible to get your car locked inside the park. Weekends normally Saturday morning, meet at the car park by the golf courses next to Roehampton Gate.
Times: Generally Saturday mornings between 10am and noon
Type of training: Endurance and hills.
Venue - Hillingdon Cycle Circuit. Hillingdon is a 1,494m circuit with an excellent surface for skating. It is gently undulating and suitable for distance training away from vehicles. Facilities are very limited, although there is a hypermarket and a sports centre within walking distance. It is located on the South-East corner of the junction between the A4020 Uxbridge Road and A312 Hayes Bypass. By car we generally park in the Lombard Retail Park on the South-West corner of the junction and cross the road at the lights. Parking at time of posting is free with no time limit there.
The 207 bus service terminates adjacent to the circuit at its Western end. the 207 runs along the A4020 all the way from Shepherd's Bush. The nearest railway stations are Southall and Hayes. From Southall turn right at the exit and continue up to the A4020 (400m) turn left for approx 1.5-2km or hop on the 207. It is an easy skate from Southall - turn left at the first set of lights from the station (Beaconsfield Road) and skate down there until near the end. Turn right down any of the side roads that go in that direction to the A4020 then turn left on the cycle path to the roundabout on the A312 - the foot entrance is just round the corner.
Times: Cycling events take precedence. We do not book the circuit so it can be hard to guarantee any regular slots though Sunday mornings are not block booked so it is generally the best time to go. It is free to use on an adhoc basis. Con
Type of training: Generally endurance some timed distances. This is the venue for the London Inline Marathon since 2007. Learning it's best skating line and getting used to the pace you can sustain is best done on the course. You can also skate continuously, free of traffic (both vehicular and pedestrian)
Venue - Imperial War Museum. Remodelled in 2008 this provides a large flat and smooth area in central London (zone 1) to do all kinds of training from drills and skills to track practice and endurance.
Times: see training threads.
Location: Behind the Imperial War Museum. Entrances on several streets. |
