After the wet World on Wheels race only 4 days ago it was now time for a dry race on a smaller (760m) circuit with some tight corners.
Thijs Veening picked up a high pace straight from the line and pulled for 2 laps, leaving small groups of skaters scattered behind him.
Unfortunately Thijs wasted a little bit too much energy on this and a larger group started to form again, I decided not to wait for everyone to regroup and made a jump of my own. Three others followed me, one of them being Remco Wolfgram, working together we quickly managed to pull a 12 sec. gap between us and the pack so that we were a bit too far away for someone to make an "easy" jump to get back to us.
It was mostly a strong Remco in the lead in a steady high pace increasing the gap to about 40 sec. a few laps before the finish, I did my share of work as best I could.
With 2 laps to go the other 3 in the group were slowing down a bit because nobody wanted to be in first position when the final sprint started, my legs didn't feel like a sprint at all so I used my extra speed (in 4th position and didn't slow down) to jump away and try to stay ahead and win it solo. Going as fast as my legs allowed me to go I could see I was quickly closing in on the main group to lap them, in the last lap I was screaming at them to please let me pass because i didn't want to lose the few seconds I was ahead of the group of three out to get me. They let me pass and there I could see the finishline! Thinking: *No looking back now, go as fast as you can and extend your leg when you get there... If not passed > raise hands and smile* There was no one passing, I just won my first race!
Remco told me afterwards he was "outhawked" on the line by Rowan Lammers (Ladies Cat. 2), by about a wheel, 3 hundredth of a second... I'm sure will hear more about Rowan in the future! She is young, fast and has a very good sprint.
Thijs had to pay for his long fast pull in the first 2 laps and I think he will choose a different tactic next time.

Sure. I didn't plan to lead the pack that long But I think I suprised many skaters, so from early on it was a real race. No chance for anyone to just cruise with the leadpack until the final lap. |
