Lille on wheels

Roller skating, or inline skating, is a popular sport in France and the UK, so it was no surprise to see the London Skater Speed Team at the largest roller event in France, held in Lille recently.
The London team was established in 2002, after a group of British skaters took part in the Le Mans 24-hour Roller relay race, on the same track used by the motor racing endurance event, and enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to attend other international marathons and endurance races.
A group of 16 skaters took part in the 10km leisure skates in Lille. The main event was the testing 42km French In Line Cup, for which two of the main boulevards were closed to traffic, as competitors skated around some of the most picturesque parts of the city. Best placing for the London team was Daniel Barlow, 18th in a time of 57:35 minutes in the Men’s 30km race. Tanya Gibson finished 20th in the Ladies Open 30km with a time of 1:17:34.
The weekend was packed with activities for skaters, including courses for six- to 15-year-olds, a 30km street roller course and the 10km leisure course. There were also roller hockey matches and a practice area for beginners. Stands sold all manner of boots and wheels, and local musicians added to the lively atmosphere.
