Hi all,
If you are planning racing at this event can you please enter online as soon as possible.
This race may have to be cancelled, because at the moment only 2 people have entered and SWF will have to make the decision on where to run this race very soon.
Thanks |

That'd be me and Will then! I could just race him on the Serp for free, though I could feasibly podium at this rate.
How come these things aren't publicized more? Are they just aimed at the elite skaters? I mean if I had just put it on FB, Serp Road and written an article for WoW I'm sure I'd have got way more than 2 people to register. Most skaters love a fun day out on a great track don't they? |

Dont be too sure.
There are skaters that focus on track racing, and we would have not seen them in any marathon race. |

But there are three spots on the podium and only 2 competitors |

| Me neither - I might head on the Windsor skate instead if nothing comes through. |

| I'd aim to be there between 10:30 and 11. Most races start at midday, but you need to turn up a bit earlier to sort out FISS membership for the race (and get warmed up) |

Rather strange race, felt between a marathon and a track race. We were grouped in gender/age rather than cats. Which chucked William below in with the big boys and girls. I rolled in with a 2nd line of three in both the 5 and 10K while most played the cat 1 go stop go stop game at the front. Errol took both races from a returning Chris Stafford.
Very nice track, windy on the day but smooth as, and more than wide enough. |

Sorry, ended up opting for the London to Windsor in search of a better workout and better Berlin prep. |

Do be careful...Berlin and L2W (and O2C) are completely different events, with objectives that require different methods of preparation.
You evidently have the ability to do a marathon in a good time with a co-operative paceline. However, overseas races, like Berlin, are quite different to the UK ones.
I would advise having a read through Rick's Mid-Pack Marathon Lecture Notes, which I think gives great insight into racing for those that haven't had much experience.
You should be able to relate a lot of the stuff we do at Tatem to the scenarios that Rick has outlined (leading a paceline, pace line breaks/splits etc).
Using the various point to point events in the UK are good for racking up skating mileage, building on fitness / stamina and preparing for long distance races (e.g. A2A, One-Eleven). However, unless you are applying a specific skating plan (getting from A to B as fast as you can doesn't count), I don't think that it's really going to give that much benefit to marathon specific races.
I definitely encourage your eagerness, but you just need to be aware of how best to train for specific events. |

I've read the notes a few times - they are brilliant.
I only meant that it was better prep in terms of being a very similar distance - its good to get a second go at skating that number of miles in before the big one to get a feel for the length.
Somehow I feel more ready for the Machiavellian pace-lines after all the tatem training than I do for pacing myself over the distance.
And with all of the uphills I think it was better for building stamina/ strength than the alternative - plus getting mileage in on the new Bonts (which are an enormous improvement) is pretty high up on my list of things to do at the moment - Sunday was their first outing! |
