Sometimes I trip and land on my hands, and if I'm unlucky this gives me a nice jolt through the arm and terrific shoulder pain.  I suspect that half the problem is that I never do any kind of upper body workout.

Anyway, in my varous googling on the subject I came across
eOrthopod
which claims among other things that
Quote:

Researchers want to know the strength of the shoulder when the scapula is in different positions. A round-shouldered or slouched posture puts the scapula in a forward position. This is called a protracted scapula.

Previous studies have shown that this position causes shoulder pain in many people. The protracted position narrows the space in the shoulder joint needed for movement, puts strain on the ligaments in the shoulder, and decreases shoulder strength.

The jolting of the shoulders or other joints comes down to being tense when you fall over - I'm lucky that I'm good at falling and can relax as i fall and rarely hurt myself when i fall over (I go to skate park and will fall over A LOT during a session but will rarely come away with even a bruise). Try landing on a bent arm and rolling into the fall to absorb the fall rather than trying to catch yourself - read some parkdour (spelling??? FreeRunning) websites

I am also i have a fairly strong upper body so this may help

Things that you can do - press ups - great for balancing the strength of the front of your body that get very little work-out from skating with the back that get relatively little. You can also do press-up on your fingers to strengthen the arms

If you are starting I'd do one set of as many as you can before you go to bed at night (as is just an easy time to do them) every night for a week
Then move up to 2 and then 3 sets
