I can think of nothing better than a weekends early season skating in the Algarve, but as I'm skiing both weekend before and weekend after I have to give it a miss
Looks great, have fun! |

| Which races are you aiming for Gav, track or the road? Or both/all? |

Podium For Riz in the ladies overall. (3rd)
Gav top Brit in the mens (with a good marathon) in 19, with "Hang" Brown in 24. Powerslide and CM seem to be in a cluster below them lead in by Dan, Matt Price did well on the track but didn't do the (or finish) marathon.
Chris O seemed to get no points after day 1, home he isn't broken. |

You can even see me in the nice little picture, elbowing Simone Bellio (ex-world 200m record holder) out of the hairpin
Well, that was a really great few days. Very glad Andy Porter convinced us to go, as the racing is at a good level for a pre-season February warm-up. Not as high a standard as past years, as the date was very close to Italian indoor championships and neither the French or Americans sent a squad this year. Clearly reflected in the difference of the winning times for the 24km race.... 33:00 by the French last year, 38:30 this year! (which was still fast enough thank you!)
Got to try out my new Bonts, which had mixed results on the road and the track, and tried out my 110s on the final of the track 10km elim. (above-mentioned Simone saying on the start line '1st time!!? you lasta two lappas 2 laps later.... yup. Damn italian know it alls!). But the Bonts really came through for me on the 24km race. First time I felt comfortable at really high speed sprints and accelerations, and stuck with the pack all the way. Very happy about that, and luckily those points counted slightly more than the road/track races, meaning I finished UK top overall, very happy about that too.
Chris Orgill got food poisoning/bad tummy bug on the 1st evening of racing and was out for the rest of it. Both Matt and Chris were suffering with shin pain from a lack of outdoor skating, which is why Matt couldn't finish the half marathon.
Amazing result from Riz, only getting beaten by former world champion Britta van Tournhout, and some ridiculous portuguese skater who got towed and pushed to the line of the half marathon which upped her points enough to overtake Riz on overall.
Hans was also as strong as a bull in some of the races, pushing himself far further than me and pulling through some times with superhuman effort (especially on the last day, finishing the 25 lap road race, after a heavy night out drinking ).
Highlights:
- Hans, myself and Dan Ibbotson beating Andy, Matt and Chris on the 5km road relay on day 1
- Riz continually kicking ass
- Crashing on a straight line in front of all the spectators trying out my new 110s on the track and catching a wheel on the longer frames
- Skating the half marathon with my new Italian team of friends (Simone, and the others), and sticking with them the whole way
- The party on Monday night (end of the 1st 3 day series)
- Skating 2 laps of the 25 lap race on Tuesday with Matt behind everyone else and thoroughly confusing everyone (spectators included) by sprinting and lunging for the finish, then high-fiving each other, and pulling out.
Big thank you to the Cado Motus guys (Andy et al, formerly Powerslide) for showing us the ropes and providing large amounts of entertainment. |
