Just got this today if anyone is interested.

On the weekend of September 4th and 5th Ipswich Borough Council will be holding the first ever coaching course (Level 2) for roller skating as an activity that is fully sanctioned by both the umbrella body for roller sport activities withing the UK - the British Roller Sports Federation - and SportsCoach UK.

Details for the course are attached.

Please note that places are limited and the minimum age requirement is 16. This should not deter friends and/or relatives of those involved in roller skating activities taking part, especially if they have a vested interest.

The following weekend, September 11th and 12th, will see a Level 3 coaching course held by the Federation of Inline Speed Skating (FISS) for specific speed skating activities. Again, this is a two day course to be held at the same venue for those people who will have obtained the Level 2 qualification and who specifically want to be qualified in coaching speed skating. Details should follow very soon.

It is hoped that these are just the start of many more fully recognised and government backed coaching courses that can be rolled out to increase the profile of roller skating as an activity as well as the specific activities of speed skating, artistic skating and hockey.

Please feel free to direct any questions to myself by return e-mail.

Regards

John C. Fry
Chairman FISS

It's not the IISA qualification and if you ask, they may waive the level 2 for anyone that has got IISA level 2 (or even 1), if you want to qualify as a speedskating coach. It's truck loads cheaper than IISA but that doesn't mean it isn't comprehensive.

Got confirmation from John Fry that if you are an ICP Level 1 or better you can send a copy of your qualification to FISS head office for verification and so be allowed to do the FISS/BRSF speed skating level 3 course. It is also £40 for two days.

Sounds interesting!

I may well be up for both courses - I've sent John an e-mail asking what specific skills and techniques the courses cover.

I also mentioned to him that the IISA level 1 course is the same dates as the FISS/BRSF level 3 course.
(See www.skatefresh.com/index.php?pid=iisa%20certification )
Probably not much of a problem for them, but just thought I should let John know in case he wasn't aware of the clash.

Mark David wants to do the speed course but it is all weekend and peak lesson time for him. They need to organise this stuff in the off season when active instructors don't have to cancel £3/400 of lessons to take a course. It still has to be on a weekend though so people who have normal jobs can get there.

John's replied to me - here's what he had to say:

Hi David

Hope you are well.

With regard to details on these courses I can tell you that the Level 2 is very basic roller skating coaching. It deals with an basic introduction to various disciplines ie. speed, artistic, hockey, etc and comprises of general skating skills - really for the beginner. The course itself is geared more towards how to teach rather than this is how you skate. There are practical sessions involved and general assessments. A certificate will be awarded at the end of it which will allow any one person to be qualified and recognised as a coach in generic roller skating by SportsCoachUK, so long as they are members of one of the governing bodies that make up BRSF (British Roller Sports Federation) - ie. FISS, FARS, NRHA, BIPHA, BiSHA.

The Level 3 course being held in September is specifically for speed skating. The other governing bodies within BRSF will develop and hold their own Level 3 courses for their own specific roller sport. This course will again deal with mainly how to teach speed skating, as well as the technical aspects of the sport itself - ie. organisation, setting up a club, etc. as well as the actual training methods and speed skating technique requirements. Again there will be practicals and assessments and again the certificate will be recognised by SportsCoach UK as a bona-fide qualification to teach speed skating, so long as you are a member of FISS.

Having already obtained an IISA Level 1 you will not have to do the Level 2 Generic Skating Course before doing the FISS Level 3 Course. It is taken as read that you have already obtained a similar qualification.

As I understand it, the IISA qualification does not allow you to be a recognised coach with SportsCoach UK for roller skating as IISA is not recognised as a national governing body for roller sports in this country, whereas these "new" courses will afford you that - ie. BRSF and it's subsidiaries are recognised by SportsCoach UK, Sport England, Sport UK and Skills Active (what was SPRITO). With affiliation to SportsCoach UK you will automatically get public liability insurance to coach up to £5million along with free legal advice on coaching/sporting matters.

I hope this has answered your questions, but if you do have any further queries do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

John

A very quick response, and pretty informative.
He didn't give the specific skills that we would be teaching (e.g. Stride 1, Heel Brake stop, A frame turn, Swizzle, Stride 2, Spin Stop, Grass Stop, Parallel Turn, per the IISA level 1 course) but I guess that just means FISS figure they're easy enough that you don't need to practice before the course...

Rang the centre yesterday, and they said they had about 5 or 6 places still available. (So around 30 places taken.)
