I've just replaced my bottom bracket okay, but wondered why the right side (crank set side) has a left hand thread.
The left side has a normal right hand thread.
With pedals, I know that the concept of having left/right thread is for safety; so they will tend to tighten rather than loosen whilst riding.
The bottom bracket however is in the fail-unsafe way. This way both the left and right side will tend to loosen; though this is quite unlikely.
I can understand that it might be cheaper to tap the (female) thread all the way through the bracket, so this will explain why there is a left thread at all, but why not just flip it round so that it's in the fail-safe direction?
The component I changed was: Shimano UN54 Bottom Bracket Square Taper - 73-118mm
