Retirement? No no no....
I am on the list, see you all there
(and before anyone is stupid enough to ask, NO I will not be skating beforehand. That can wait for another day!!!) |

I'm in too. (unless rain is forecast of course...)
Quite excited as well. It's so long since I last rode my proper bike. Nearly 1,000km of daily commutes though. |

Good point...what level of rain is tolerable before the start for people here to call a go? |

| Me too. I can't imagine the ride being fun if there is even a hint of rain, keeping warm would be next to impossible. |

on the Whitstable ride last Halloween it rained heavily about an hour before departure and more rain threatened...Tanya and I spent the first part of the ride hemming and hawing on whether to bail or not, constantly looking skywards trying to second-guess the weather gods' intentions...(Dan B, being made of sterner stuff, had decided to ride whatever)...at the Thames Barrier we decided we'd gone too far to bail even if it started to rain so we kept going and had a pretty much dry run all the way to Whitstable...in the end a great ride and to think I'd almost cried off (morality tale!) |

Bike is checked and I think all I need may be some spare tubes.
Regarding my own personal weather call, I can live with the odd shower, but if the forecasts are for driving rain I won't be at the start. |

The biggest problem with rain is punctures.

More or less my position as well. I still clearly remember coming down from Ditchling in sideways hail, and it was character-building but I wouldn't necessarily have opted to if I knew it was on the menu at the start. But in two years of doing 50-90% of these rides I think it's only been proper wet about twice, so ... |

I don't seem to need the rain for that, I manage quite well without it
After yesterday's ride in the rain, I can confirm that I'm not riding if it's raining or a good chance of rain throughout the night. Whilst cycling when it's raining is ok, once you stop, it becomes even more apparent how cold and wet you are. Trying to start off again would not be fun.
I guess the alternative is not to stop, but to keep going! |

what Ed! said!
plus in my case "to keep going" is not yet an option, I guess...
yesterday I thought I was ok while we were riding in the rain, but when we stopped I felt cold quite quickly...
when we started riding again I thought I was warming up again easily, but then when we stopped by Ed's I realized my gloves were soaking wet...
by the time I arrived home I could definitely feel some water getting through two pairs of overshoes and a pair of winter boots, and that was after just less than two hours of riding
another point I was considering is how miserable we would feel at 3.30am if we had been cycling in the rain for 3.5 hours... we'd be wet and cold, in the middle of the night, with no daylight to bring our mood up, in a warm place and with another 2/3 hours to go ahead of us... not sure I could be convinced to get back on my bike at that point...
I'll carbo load tonight anyway though, just in case |

Ok, the list of people coming that I know are:
* Andy
Christine O (Cherry)
Christophe
Dan B
* Diego
* Me
Simon L (Slezzer)
* Tanya
* Tom
Have I missed anyone?
Some are planning on doing the LFNS (if it's on) first - I am somewhat undecided.
Either way, I think there is some resemblence of a plan to meet (those marked with a *) at The Vic later in the evening (times depend on LFNS /general laziness) and cycle down to HPC together. Get in touch if you'd like to meet up too, else see you at the start point. |

I won't be there tonight. Another busy day tomorrow house-hunting, plus it looks like lots of rain overnight down south. Have fun! (and good luck!)
(Naughty ed!)
