Had a very nice intervals session today. Followed the first example session of Barry Publows tips on inlineplanet.com (a good read: http://www.inlineplanet.com/2006-03/10-publow.html)
Felt great to be out on skates in beautiful weather today. I also had quite some fun with a group of cyclists. I was just doing the fartlek when three came past, so I decided to hop on at the back. Kept with them till the road ended and we went different directions. Was very good training 'cause they did changeovers as well and were of different speeds, fartlek at its best They were quite nice actually and we had a short chat in between when there was a brief break. |

I believe you are talking about rest/recovery, Mike, common practice is to do this at other times that during the middle of a training session |

Merten, your comment gets me started on some sociological considerations: The Difference of Nations.
It is good that you have got to chat with those cyclists. When I lived in Minneapolis very few cyclists wanted to be seen with a skater behind (it meant they were slow, too slow) so they always tried to pull away.
In Italy, if you try chasing a byciclist, he or she may stop and get into an argument. Riding a bycicle in Northern Italy is akeen to a religious act and nobody can dissacrate it. When you buy a $3-4,000+ bycicle you need to prove you are worthy or you are just a show off (like those raiding horses in Hyde Park). I come from a family who has produced a few professional byciclists (not big names, let me be clear) in the past. My father used to send me to bed without dinner if he ever caught me doing less than 30km/h on a flat course ... and I was 11-12 not 20. In my town once 5 byciclists beat up the driver of a car who cut them and then stop to complain.. The black cab drivers in London should be sent to Italy for a quick course on education in dealing with byciclists.
In some parts of the US it is impossible to chase byciclists as there is none. In some parts of Missouri, to mention a state, once they threw bottles to the riders involved in a competition. If they see a skater, they might skin the poor chap. On the other hand, if you are near LA and happen to skate on the Strand (the bike path that goes along the Ocean for miles and miles) nobody thinks about chasing bycicles as there are a lot of hard bodies in bikini and both cyclists and skaters share the view in true spirit of fellowship.
Coming close to where home is right now, here in London, in Hyde Park, a few cyclists are startled to see a skater going at there speeds or faster. They cannot conceive such a thing and find it little logical. I am concerned about startling them too much now so I try avoiding it, least they suffer a heart attack and then sue me.
If the roads were slightly nicer it would be nice to give chase to most cyclists. Most of them are no good (and I could rank them by zip codes, but it is not so important) Big numbers of them are seen at 7am or so all wearing yellow jackets. I wonder if they are going to work or if it is a team training for the 2012 Olympics. The ones you never want to chase are the black cab drivers; they surely know London, but they drive like shit and have been known to hit byciclists (once it happened with me inside) and they have zero-tolerance for anything in their way. Once I was skating on the Ring (a fairly bad road inside Hyde Park) on a Saturday morning at 6am. The first piece is wide and I was using the parking lane, but after a while it ends and cab drivers do not pay attention to you. This bloke came so close to me that I felt the black paint. They do not care much for human life.. I wish the authority closed the park to any traffic on Saturday at least. It would be nice not to see their cabs inside.
This morning at 7am I managed to startle a horse. There are always a few riders at hands showing off how rich they are riding on the paved segment of the Serpentine Road. Kind of difficult to chase a horse though.. byciclist do not kick and do not answer nature calls in the middle of the road. Talking to the riders is a giant task as they seem to look at you as a pariah, but I would like to invite them to show their skills on the back of a bull in a rodeo. Do you think they would be game for it? Naahh.... You make more money riding bulls than horses though if you are any good, of course you break more bones too...
How about France or Germany or the Netherlands or Belgium? Never had the pleasure to skate there..... I came close to skate in Canada a few times but it did not happen. |

Did a session with Tanya, Erika and Amy(on bike) at Richmond and thoroughly enjoyed it - moreso because I did the whole lot on my speed skates
To quote Mr McDonald: "I'm lovin' it" |
